Here is a comparative study of a finished large Polaroid vs the original pencil drawing;

halfhalf

More and more I feel like the pencil should be shown next to the pilling up finished Polaroid. There is a line that gets lost in the painting process. Which is a shame, but isn’t it un-avoidable?

I also realized, silly me, that I should always scan the finished painting before the last gloss, because even though the gloss once dry sorta makes the color deeper and nicer when I scan it there is this shine I cannot get rid off….

here is the finished Polaroid, as you can see it shines. I was happier with the overall light on this one.

And the entire original pencil drawing.

For those wondering I always start drawing with a color pencil in blue, purple or orange to block out the composition before going over it with an HB pencil. Then it’s off to the tracing table, where you usually loose the original line…

The drawing is a preserved memory of one of those warm summer night spent dancing till the sun rise, worrying about nothing but the present moment, looking at the floating lights and trying to see faces in the dark, being blind and mindless and in love.

I’ve been listening to a lot of classical music tonight and remembered how much that stuff really grabs my insides, so I’ll end up the post with the adequate lyrics excerpt from Strauss’s four last song, “At Sunset”;

We have through sorrow and joy
gone hand in hand;
From our wanderings, let’s now rest
in this quiet land.

Around us, the valleys bow
as the sun goes down.
Two larks soar upwards
dreamily into the light air.

Come close, and let them fly.
Soon it will be time for sleep.
Let’s not lose our way
in this solitude.

O vast, tranquil peace,
so deep in the evening’s glow!
How weary we are of wandering—
Is this perhaps death?

Here’s another large Polaroid, 11×15″ special for Valentine’s Day. It’s entitled “Shift” after the Grizzly bear song that was playing that night, exactly a year ago from now.

Some moments or people are associated with songs, I can remember precisely what I was doing with whom when I hear certain songs. Sometimes it makes me feel sad, sometimes I’m just happy I’m able to remember so vividly these long gone memories…. Oceania by Bjork, Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheels, What if we could by Trent Reznor& Atticus Ross, recently Shift by Grizzly Bear and Holocene by Bon Iver, are some examples of songs I associate with specific moments and specific people in my life.

For some reason, when listening to Shift,  I always hear “And when you  call I’ll be gone” when the actual lyrics are;

Baby, I’ve got silver and I’ve got gold
But when push comes to shove, this is getting old
I wouldn’t have it any other way
No, I wouldn’t have it any other way
And when you call I’ll be there
There…
I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Is my subconscious scared the person I care about won’t be there when I need him? Or is it I who won’t be there when they finally call?

SHIFTI’ll close on my favorite song from last year; Skinny Love by Bon Iver:

Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt, we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

Tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in this moment this order’s tall

And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind

In the morning I’ll be with you
But it will be a different kind
I’ll be holding all the tickets
And you’ll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love, what happened here?
Suckle on the hope in lite brassieres
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full, so slow on the split

And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind

And now all your love is wasted
And then who the hell was I?
And I’m breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

———-

I still wouldn’t have it any other way….

I was recently really moved by a song from Bjork’s latest album which urge the listener to recognize the sacrifice made by women for the sake of Love.
It seems biology compels females to sacrifice; to protect their young, their lover… Women sacrifice a lot out of love, sometimes even their pride and dignity…

Where is the line between dominant and dominated? When do you lose respect for your partner? Why? Being submitted to your love’s desires can be very conflicting. The fear to loose the respect from your Lover is frightening.
Women had to be submissive to men’s will for centuries. And even today the freedom we gain remain very fragile. How many times do women have to take insults, demeaning remarks etc… from their partners and just take them in. Men don’t even realize how hurtful they can be, they just instinctively want to be the “dominant” one.

I strongly believe in mutual respect but it’s been proven challenging to obtain…

Some people are capable to make great sacrifices out of love, some people are not.
Being capable of sharing intimacy and thinking of someone other than yourself is a great challenge for some… while natural for others.

Women give a lot, they are capable of lowering their pride out of Love. They give, they follow around, they dedicate themselves entirely just to get a minimum of appreciation from their lover.
Some people just aren’t worth the sacrifice…

Here is the song. The Lyrics say it all…
Sacrifice

“Why can’t you give her room?
Respect her spatial needs.
I feel you compress her
Into a small space.

With clairvoyance,
She knew what you needed,
And she gave it to you.
Now her desires are repressed
Arrows in the flesh

When she found your love,
Her nature bowed her head
She surrendered,
She renounced the world for you,
Now she’s poisoned by demands
You cannot answer.

Why this sacrifice?
Now she regrets the whole thing,
A delayed reaction
When she left her craft voluntarily
For your nest, for your love.
Did you understand?

Appreciate,
Build a bridge to her.
Initiate a touch
Before it’s too late,
Say the words to her
That will make her shine.

Tell her that you love her.

Your generosity will show
In the volume of her glow.”

till soon…
